Task Force endorses Equality March

Thousands of people from across the country will march and rally in front of the U.S. Capitol demanding equal protection under the law for LGBT people and their families in all 50 states. At the march, the Task Force will engage new activists, support fair-minded clergy and other people of faith, and mobilize volunteer activists to return home engaged and energized.

When we mobilize for LGBT equality, for racial and economic justice, for a transformed society, and to make our love and lives visible, the Task Force is there. The Task Force will be there at the march to support the voices of new activists, LGBT people and our allies who push and push for the end to hatred, discrimination and unjust laws," says National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey.

Lil Mama Appologizes

Lil Mama offended transgendered people when she made these remarks, on America's Best Dance Crews, to Vogue Evolution's Trans. dancer Leiomy Maldonado.

"I live for Vogue Evolution. Your performance was good but it wasn't excellent.... Leiomy, your behavior -- come on -- it's unacceptable. I just feel that you always have to remember your truth. You were born a man, and you are becoming a woman. If you're going to become a woman, act like a lady. Don't be a bird -- like, 'Oh, my God, I'm not doing this!' You know what I'm saying? It gets too crazy and it gets confusing. You're doing this for America. Even though you're the face for transgenders, you're the face for America with this group, and it's not about anybody else. It's about y'all. So, do it for the team!"

After taking some heat from the Trans. community, Lil Mama issued this apology through GLAAD:

"I would like to clarify anything that was misunderstood from Sunday's show. My remarks were never meant to be disrespectful regarding Leiomy's gender no offensive to the LGBT community, which has been a community that has supported me in all my endeavors. However, in hindsight, I recognize that my words may have come across as hurtful. I spoke with her privately after the taping to express that it was not my intent to offend her or any member of the transgender community and that still live for Vogue Evolution."

The real meaning behind Wendy Williams' " How Ya Doin' "

Wendy Williams is the hot TV talk show host with the catchy little "How Ya Doin'" greeting. Check out Wendy giving a lesson on how to say it properly.

However, the phrase probably isn't exactly what you thought. As it turns out, the phase is used properly when you meet someone who is gay. Now I'm thinking this may be a little discriminator since you are to turn down your bottom lip when you say it. What do you think? Check out this old clip, from her radio days, to get the real "gay" meaning behind the phase:

What do you think? Is Wendy

NOM anti-gay candidate loses in Iowa

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) was hoping yesterday’s special election in Iowa would give them a chance to add an anti-equality legislator to the state House but now that the votes are counted, it’s clear Iowans aren’t interested in discrimination. NOM poured $86,080 into the state to elect Stephen Burgmeier in Iowa House District 90. He lost to Democrat Curt Hanson by 107 votes (3932 to 3825).

In addition, One Iowa and the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa filed the complaint Monday alleging that NOM, a New Jersey-based group that opposes same-sex marriage, violated Iowa campaign finance law in their Iowa House District 90 campaign.

“NOM has complete disregard of Iowa law as they engage in express advocacy in our state, while refusing to release the identity of their donors, as is legally required in Iowa law,” the complaint said. “NOM has a history of funneling secret money throughout the country to engage in similar activity.”

In case you missed it, NOM launched this commercial for the race in Iowa.

Kevin Thorton in Philly for Fringe Festival

Kevin Thornton is an openly gay musician, guitarist, comedian, and all-around great guy, who will be playing in Philly's Fringe Festival over the next 3 weeks. His semi-autobiographical one man show, Sex, Dreams, & Self Control, tells about his struggle coming out to his friends, family, religious figures but in a hilarious, musical way. Nightlifegay.com caught up with Kevin to ask him the following questions:

Where did you grow-up?
I was reared in the southern-most tip of Indiana in a little town called Evansville. At one point in the 80s- Inside Edition did an expose on the place calling it "Satan's Playground". That's pretty accurate.

When did you know you would be an entertainer?
I played baby Jesus in the church Christmas play. I was an infant of course. (That would be a strange role for an adult, wouldn't it?) Apparently I screamed and cried through the whole thing. I like putting all the attention on myself.

How did you get started in the entertainment business?
After spending thousands of dollars on a theatre performance degree (money well spent?!?), I moved to Nashville to record an album. That CD won a Nashville Scene Music Award that year, and everything sort of rolled forward from there.

Who influenced your career?
Musically speaking The Smiths are my favorite band. Jackson Browne, John Hiatt, and Elvis Costello are my favorite songwriters and their influence can be felt in my current work especially. As far as stand up comedians and storytellers- David Sedaris and Sandra Bernhard.

Has you sexuality influenced your career?

Absolutely- when I started out in Nashville I was very open in the local scene. In the buckle of the Bible belt, that really set me apart. Currently, my one man show deals with LGBT themes.

What is “Sex, Dreams & Self Control”?

"Sex, Dreams & Self Control" is a wildly hilarious coming out memoir. It's like David Sedaris with a guitar-- only more gay. It follows a young Indiana boy being groomed as a youth pastor on a strange sexual awakening. A mix of stand up comedy, storytelling and acoustic concert.

Where and when are you coming to Philadelphia?
I will be at the William Way Community Center Sept 4, 5, 18, & 19th.
and The Walking Fish Theatre Sept 10, 11, 12, 16, & 17th.

What is the one thing you want to do when you are in town?
See the Edgar Allen Poe House!

Plans for the future?
I'm working on some new Waves on Waves material that I will release this winter. Also the "Say Goodnight" video will premiere on LOGO in October. Also, I've got ideas for a new show cooking...

Anonymous NLG reader renames Bump to "Q"

Congratulations goes out to an anonymous Nightlifegay.com reader!! The anonymous reader suggested "Q" as the new name for Philly's Bump Lounge. After hearing about a possible name change, Nightlifegay.com put out the call to its readers for name suggestions. The new owners, who read Nightlifegay.com, loved the "Q" suggestion and have decided to go with it. Pictured is the new Q logo they sent here first.

Bump Lounge is expected to go under renovations beginning around September 10th and the owners hope to have them completed by September 24th. When it reopens the restaurant/lounge will be called Q!

Carrie Prejean sues over gay comment

Washington's domestic partnerships in danger

After a month of counting petition signatures, Washington's secretary of state's said yesterday that Referendum 71 had 121,617 valid voter signatures - more than a thousand more than needed to put it on the ballot in the general election.

What does this mean? It means Washington's expanded domestic partnerships for same-sex couples could face a public vote....and domestic partnership in jeopardy.

The new partnership law, nicknamed "everything but marriage" by its supporters, would broaden domestic partnerships by granting gay and lesbian couples all the remaining state-provided benefits that presently apply only to married heterosexual couples.

Hubby Hubby from Ben & Jerry's

Ben & Jerry’s is temporarily renaming popular “Chubby Hubby” ice cream “Hubby Hubby” beginning today to celebrate the start of legalized gay marriage in its home state of Vermont.

“The legalization of marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Vermont is certainly a step in the right direction, and something worth celebrating with peace, love - and plenty of ice cream,” Ben & Jerry’s CEO Walt Freese said in announcing the sugary switch.

Ben & Jerry’s, which has long backed liberal causes, plans to rebrand “Chubby Hubby” as “Hubby Hubby” for 30 days to show support for Vermont’s new law.

Lil Mama tells Leiomy behavior is unacceptable.

Last night on America's Best Dance Crew, Lil Mama spoke her mind to transgendered dancer Leiomy Maldonado. Leiomy and her crew where having some problems during the week with Leiomy walking off in practice - leaving her crew upset. Here is what Lil Mama had to say:

"I live for Vogue Evolution. Your performance was good but it wasn't excellent.... Leiomy, your behavior -- come on -- it's unacceptable. I just feel that you always have to remember your truth. You were born a man, and you are becoming a woman. If you're going to become a woman, act like a lady. Don't be a bird -- like, 'Oh, my God, I'm not doing this!' You know what I'm saying?
