R.I.P. Elizabeth Edwards

One of the most gracious and articulate health care reform advocates in the U.S., Elizabeth Edwards, passed away today after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.  She was first diagnosed in 2004 at the tail end of her husband's campaign for the Vice Presidency.  Edwards shared her story with the public throughout treatment, helping to educate millions about early detection and preventive care.  Despite very public marital struggles as a result of her husband's infidelities, Edwards remained focused on her health and advocacy.  She absolutely exemplified what it means to have "grace under pressure."  We wish her family and friends our support and prayers during this difficult time.

What Will Happen with the Repeal of 'DADT'?

Earlier today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D - Nev.) reaffirmed his commitment to bring the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' to a vote in a rapidly dwindling lame duck session of Congress.  Advocates for the repeal fear that an uncharacteristically full lame duck legislative agenda may bump 'DADT' from the "priority" list, leaving the issue unresolved in this session.

If that happens, legislators would have to re-introduce the bill during the next session - and with the GOP having made such decisive gains in the mid-term elections, the likelihood of repeal will diminish greatly.

Gay and lesbian military service members, activists, and community representatives have been pushing for repeal over the past two year with one of the most united and strategic efforts in the history of the politicized gay rights movement.  Unfortunately, a previous attempt to bring the legislation to a floor vote in the Senate last September was thwarted when the Republican caucus blocked consideration of the National Defense Authorization bill - of which, the repeal of 'DADT' is a provision.  Senator Reid said Republicans blocked consideration of the entire bill in September because they don't have sufficient votes to remove the 'DADT' provision on the Senate floor.

There are some indications the President Obama is still pushing for the repeal of 'DADT' before lawmakers adjourn for the year.  However, those recent comments have come from staff who only spoke to the media on the condition of anonymity - little has been said on the matter by President Obama in the past couple of weeks.

If 'DADT' is not repealed during before the close of business this year, the likelihood of repeal prior to the next Presidential election drops precipitously.  When you consider that 'DADT' is one of the least contentious LGBT policy issues (compared to other agenda items like gay marriage, anti-discrimination, gay parental rights, etc.), President Obama may have very little upon which to hang his hat when trying to court the gay vote during his reelection campaign. The gay community has been patient with him, but two more years with so many promises, and so few victories will not likely sit well when we hit the polls.  What are your thoughts?

Actress Amber Heard Comes OUT

WOWSA!!! Chalk one up for the lesbians.  Though I'm not into girls, I'm man enough to admit that Amber Heard is one incredibly gorgeous woman - by any standards.  The 24-year old actress came out of the closet in dramatic fashion at GLAAD's 25th anniversary party last Friday night in Los Angeles.

Heard turned heads in front of the step-and-repeat when she arrived with her partner, photographer Tasya van Ree, in tow.  Heard is a budding film star, having landed major roles in several hits, including Pineapple Express, Zombieland, Never Back Down, The Stepfather, and The Joneses.  She's also been cast in several highly anticipated upcoming movies, such as The Ward,  And Soon the Darkness, and Drive Angry.  In explaining the impetus for her public coming out to AfterEllen.com, Heard took a very mature position - especially for a young person living and working in Hollywood:

"When I became aware of my role in the media, I had to ask myself an important question, 'Am I part of the problem?'  And I think that when millions and millions of hard-working, tax-paying Americans are denied their rights and denied their equality, you have to ask yourself what are the factors that are an epidemic problem and that's what this is.  Injustice can never be stood for.  It always must be fought against and I just was sick of it being a problem.  I personally think that if you deny something or if you hide something, you're inadvertently admitting it's wrong.  I don't feel like I'm wrong."

Congrats to Heard!  We wish her a long and successful career, as well as a wonderful, loving relationship with her partner!!

Spotlight on the Holiday POPS!

I had the opportunity to enjoy the debut performance of Peter Nero and the Holiday POPS! last Saturday. Over the last several years, the POPS have become a holiday institution in Philadelphia - and this year's show is one for the ages. Though there were several fantastic performances, the Philadelphia Boys Choir's rendition of the Jackson 5's hit "I'll Be There" stole the show. The Holiday POPS! features over 250 musicians onstage simultaneously, including the Philly POPS, the POPS festival chorus, the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas Gospel Choir, the Philadelphia Boys Choir, organist Peter Conte, and Broadway star, Rachel York. The show runs next weekend, as well as December 15th, 18th, 19th, 21st, and 22nd. There is absolutely no better way to get in the holiday spirit than with the Philly POPS!. Go to www.kimmelcenter.org for the performance schedule and ticketing.

Gay & Lesbian Teens Face Harsher Punishment

A new study found gay, lesbian and bisexual teenagers are 40 per cent more likely to be punished at school or by the police and courts than their straight peers. Researchers said that while there were substantial differences in the arrests, police stops, convictions and school expulsions of gay and straight teenagers, there was no evidence for differences in behaviour.

The Yale University study found that lesbian and bisexual girls were particularly at risk. They were two to three times more likely to be punished than straight girls for the same misconduct.

McCain changes goal line again on DADT

Opera Company of Philadelphia's "Hallelujah" video tops the 5.5 million viewers

The Opera Company of Philadelphia brought together over 650 choristers from 28 participating organizations to perform one of the Knight Foundation's "Random Acts of Culture" at Macy's in Center City Philadelphia. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ - the world's largest pipe organ - the OCP Chorus and throngs of singers from the community infiltrated the store as shoppers, and burst into a pop-up rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's "Messiah" at 12 noon, to the delight of surprised shoppers. This event is one of 1,000 "Random Acts of Culture" to be funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation over the next three years. The initiative transports the classical arts out of the concert halls and opera houses and into our communities to enrich our everyday lives.

Britney Spears Boyfriend Drama

Recent news concerning Britney Spears and her boyfriend, Jason Trawick, includes allegations of abuse, lies, and unethical behavior by the media.  Here's a synopsis from www.popeater.com!

"Paparazzi snapped several pictures of Britney Spears and what appears to be an angry Jason Trawick together in her car yesterday, after allegations of abuse.

RadarOnline posted a taped conversation allegedly between Spears and her former husband of 55 hours, Jason Alexander in which a voice reported to be Spears says, "That f***er is not my fiance."

The voice attributed to Alexander asks, "I thought he proposed to you or something at the beach?" Spears answers, "Before or after he beat on me?"

Both Radar and Star magazine have reported about the alleged abuse. However, Spears released a statement deriding the false accusations.

"The statements attributed to Jason Alexander are a complete fabrication as Britney has not had any form of communication with Mr. Alexander in years. The audio recording posted on Radaronline this morning purporting to be between Britney Spears and Jason Alexander is so obviously fake as to be laughable," her website reads."

"Christmas" Back at Philly's Village

Christmas will once again loom over Philly's village outside City Hall. The word was removed just two days ago among protest by some Scrooge like folk but this year's holiday cheer rang louder. Amongst a flood of complaints that the word "Christmas" was removed, City Hall has decided to keep Christmas Village as it was originally intended and reinsert the word.

Lets face it, Christmas is not a religious holiday to many....Santa clearly stole St. Nick's holiday in the U.S.
