Brown introduces Equal Benefits Bill in Philadelphia

Philadelphia Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown introduced a bill calling for Equal Benefits for same sex partners. Contractors accepting service contracts from the City of Philadelphia of $250,000 or more must extend the same employment benefits to life partners of its employees that is extended to spouses of married employees.

The contractor must certify that its employees have been notified of the employment benefits available to life partners, and that such employment benefits will actually be available. Any contractor who fails to comply with this ordinance may be suspended or debarred from bidding on or participating in future contracting opportunities with the City of Philadelphia up to three years.

“In the 21st Century, the battle for equal rights needs to end with equality being the victor,” said Councilwoman Reynolds Brown. “We have an opportunity with this bill to take one more important step to ensure that all Philadelphians who are ‘created equal’ are treated equal. Judging one’s employment benefits due to the gender of their life partner is not acceptable in this day and age. Period. We will change that standard through the Equal Benefits Bill.”

Philadelphia will join over a dozen municipalities and counties across the nation currently offering an Equal Benefits Ordinance or similar legislation. (Atlanta, GA; Berkley, CA; Broward County, FL; King County, WA; Long Beach, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Miami Beach, FL; Minneapolis, MN; Oakland, CA; Olympia, WA; Portland, ME; Sacramento, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; San Francisco, CA; San Mateo County, CA; Seattle, WA; Tumwater, WA and the State of California)

GetEQUAL to protest National Prayer Breakfast

GetEqual is set to protest the National Prayer Breakfast tomorrow in Washington, D.C. The group protest The Family and will meet at 6:00 a.m. on the sidewalk outside the Washington Hilton - located at 1919 Connecticut Ave., N.W.

From GetEqual's Website:

Background on “The Family”
While its organizers would have you believe the National Prayer Breakfast is an ecumenical gathering absent a policy agenda, it is in fact the signature event of the year for the clandestine operation “The Family.” This fringe group uses the visibility and support from the National Prayer Breakfast (attended by many politicians and business leaders) and other events to further its world-wide campaign against LGBT individuals. Associates of “The Family” continue to promote a proposed law in Uganda that would imprison for life and murder LGBT people — just for being who they are — while also criminalizing knowing an LGBT person without reporting them.

“The Family” has invested much in mentoring current and future world leaders, including David Bahati, a Ugandan legislator and author of the Ugandan anti-homosexuality bill (a.k.a. the Ugandan “Kill the Gays” bill).

On the morning of February 3, we’ll gather on the sidewalk outside the Prayer Breakfast to educate the attendees on “The Family’s” role in this annual event, to stand up to their bigotry, and to stop the Family’s interference in Ugandan affairs, which itself has been called a trial run for what they want to happen in the U.S.

Join GetEQUAL DC for coffee, donuts, protest and solidarity for A Breakfast Without Bigotry.
