New Study Suggests 9 Million LGBT Americans

A new study by the Williams Institute suggests there are roughly 9 million LGBT Americans.

Drawing on information from four recent national and two state-level population-based surveys, the analyses suggest that there are more than 8 million adults in the US who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual, comprising 3.5% of the adult population. There are also nearly 700,000 transgender individuals in the US.

Key findings from the study include among adults who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, bisexuals comprise a slight majority (1.8% compared to 1.7% who identify as lesbian or gay); women are substantially more likely than men to identify as bisexual; estimates of those who report any lifetime same-sex sexual behavior and any same-sex sexual attraction are substantially higher than estimates of those who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. An estimated 19 million Americans (8.2%) report that they have engaged in same-sex sexual behavior and nearly 25.6 million Americans (11%) acknowledge at least some same-sex sexual attraction.

The Dark Knight Rises to be shot in Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Film Office announced that Warner Bros. Pictures’ feature film “The Dark Knight Rises”, the conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, will be filmed in Pittsburgh during the summer of 2011.

The film is slated to open nationwide on July 20, 2012.

“We are thrilled to be welcoming the Batman film to Pittsburgh, and eager for the economic impact that our City will experience,” Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said. “This is another example of the growing film industry in our community and we will be rolling out the red carpet for them.”

This will be Christopher Nolan’s first film in southwestern Pennsylvania. The filmmaker said he chose Pittsburgh for its great architecture and diversity of locations. “Pittsburgh is a beautiful city. We have been able to find everything we were looking for here and I am excited to spend the summer in Pittsburgh with our final installment of Batman.”

Dawn Keezer, director of the Pittsburgh Film Office said, “Film production means jobs for Pennsylvanians, it’s as simple as that. A single film can mean millions of dollars and many local jobs. A franchise as prestigious as Batman opens our region up to an entirely new audience as filmmakers and studio executives experience southwestern Pennsylvania.”

Model for Philadelphia

The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation is looking for real-life Philadelphians interested in showing off their smiles at photo shoots throughout the region this spring and summer. Come out and join them for a meet and mingle – and enjoy a drink on the house (if you’re over 21, that is).

If you’re selected for a photo shoot, you’ll get to spend a couple hours at a cool attraction, restaurant or shop, and you’ll make a few extra dollars while you’re at it. Plus, your great face could appear on ads, in newspapers, on websites—maybe even on a billboard!"

Mr. Gay Woody's

Philadelphia's bar scene heated up this past weekend with preliminary events for April 16th's Philadelphia Mr. Gay. The Venture Inn kicked things off on Friday night with one of the hottest group of guys I have ever seen at a preliminary event. Then on Saturday night, both Woody's and Voyeur held their own competitions.

The photo above is of Lawrence who was named Mr. Gay Woody's 2011. Unfortunately, I am a terrible photographer and I didn't hire anyone to capture all the hot guys....you'll just have to come to the main event at Voyeur.

Enemy of the Week: Rhode Island State Rep. Dan Gordon

Rhode Island State Representative Dan Gordon recently threatened to yank funding away from the Tiverton public school system because Tiverton High School has an active Gay-Straight Student Alliance. Despite excellent academic performance, Gordon feels that the mere existence of a group that promotes tolerance and understanding of the LGBT community is reason enough to pull funding. He has no place in public office, and I sincerely hope our brothers and sisters in Rhode Island don't take his discriminatory behavior lying down!!!

Archie Comics Dedicates Miniseries for 1st Gay Character

In an effort to remain relevant and contemporary, the Archie Comic Series is planning a 4-issue miniseries featuring openly gay character, Kevin Keller. Keller debuted in 2010 as one of Veronica's increasingly diverse circle of friends. Though Keller is far from the first gay character to appear in comics, he's the first title character with his own series of issues.

According to Dan Parent, who is writing and drawing Keller's miniseries, "the world of Riverdale has to reflect contemporary culture and to show it is an accepting, diverse place. And that's why Kevin is important - to show that everybody is welcome in this all-American town we've embraced for over 70 years." Parent told the AP that the series will focus on Kevin's friendships, his strong bond with his father, and his coming out to friends and family. Big props to everyone involved in this important series!!

NYC beating not hate crime as basher is gay too

Police have arrested a homeless man in connection with the Damian Furtch beating outside a West Village McDonalds, police said Saturday.

Anthony Bray, 21, has been charged with misdemeanor assault and not with a hate crime in connection with the 4:30 a.m. attack on Furtch last Sunday, DCPI said.

Bray told police the attack wasn't a hate crime because he's gay too. He told police that the victim "disrespected" him.

Gay Navy serviceman gets to keep his job

Navy Petty Officer Derek Morado, who was facing discharge from the Navy yesterday in California is allowed to stay in the military. By a vote of 3-0, Derek was recommended for retention. The case was exteremly disturbing since "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" had been repealed 100 days ago. Unfortunately, there are still other similar cases out there.
