Gay-rights pioneer Barbara Gittings will be forever remembered for her contributions to the LGBT community in the City of Brotherly Love. Philadelphia City Council unanimously approved a measure which will rename Locust Street between 12th and 13th Streets as Barbara Gittings Way.Equality Forum which lead the effort is planning the dedication to coincide with the launch of Gay History Month on October 1st. Details on the ceremony will be announced soon.
Barbara was the editor of the first lesbian publication; with Frank Kameny organized the Annual Reminders at Independence Hall and Liberty Bell; spearheaded the successful initiative to have the American Library Association include gay and lesbian books in the nation’s card catalogs and libraries; and with Frank Kameny took on the American Psychiatric Association resulting in gay being removed from the list of mental illnesses.
